 What is the difference between diegetic and non-diegetic sound?

Diegetic sound is sound that come from the setting of the film.

Non-diegetic sound is sound that comes from our world, which was recorded such as a soundtrack or scoring.

Diegetic sound could include the voices of characters or utensils clattering in the back ground or music coming from a instrument being played on screen

Non-Diegetic sound could be a sound effect or a voice over for a character with dialogue, for example, the famous movie directed by Steven Spielberg 'Jurassic Park' the T-Rex's roar was actually a combination of a baby elephants squeal, alligator's gurgling and a Tiger's Snarl, recorded in the wild.
